Basking: A small crowd enjoys the cricket at Cornwall Park. Cornwall Cricket Club were on form for Saturday's play against Waitakere in round five of the Jeff Crowe Cup at Cornwall Park. Waitakere couldn't capitalise on their recent Twenty20 victory over Hibiscus Coast, resuming the one-day competition losing to Cornwall by a demoralising 123 runs. It appeared the visitors were still in holiday mode as Cornwall raced to an unassailable 269-8 after winning the toss and electing to bat. No 2 batsman Rob Newton was the standout as he steadied the ship for Cornwall with 80 runs from 85 balls. It was a solid batting performance right through the order leaving the token highlight of Waitakere's Praneel Hira taking the team's best bowling figures of three wickets for 52 runs. Waitakere needed their top order to fire with the blade but made the worst possible start when opener Hayden Pye-Redfearn was caught for a duck after only four deliveries. Opener Aditya Dhadwal and Sean Chick in the middle order were the only talking points for Waitakere as they inevitably crumbled to 146 all out in the 32nd over. Waitakere medium-pacer Hira says Cornwall played smart right throughout. ''Our bowling was rusty and we kept giving away the odd boundary. We needed close to six an over and at one point we were two for five but we had to try and keep moving. ''But Cornwall put the clamps on with their spinners and we were always behind the eight ball,'' Hira says. Result: Cornwall 269-8 (R Newton 80, A Sharma 37, R Sharma 35, D Schischka 3-52) defeated Waitakere City 146 (Ad Dhadwal 39, S Chick 33, S Marra 4-55) by 123 runs.
