Photo: JASON OXENHAM When a car crashed through the front win- dow of the Parklands Lotto and $1, $2, $3 Store it felt like a scene out of a movie for owner John Han. The Balmoral shop on Rocklands Ave was hit last Wednesday by a driver in his 70s who is thought to have hit the accelerator instead of the brake. Mr Han was behind the counter at the time of the crash and says it was very scary. It was like the movies -- the front of the car was in the store, there was glass everywhere and things had fallen down like dominoes. Mr Han says his shop looked like a war zone and he is awaiting insurance assessors. I guess more than $10,000 of damage has been done and it has influenced business. It s ugly and it looks like we are closing down. Age Concern executive officer Grant Withers says the elderly are encouraged to remain independent. If they are safe and comply with the rules and have a licence they should continue to drive, he says. Mr Withers says acci- dent statistics are low for older people compared to youth drivers. The statistics are bet- ter in terms of injuries than crashes in young people, he says. From 80 onwards they have to have a medical certificate every two years. The driver and his wife suffered no injuries.
