For as long as Nicky can remember she s always been in love with the makeup and beauty world and at last, by enrolling at the Samala Robinson Academy, she is about to fulfil her dreams. From the age of 15, while still at school, Nicky worked part-time in her parent s cafe in Warkworth and learned the art of making really good coffee. After working in more cafes she qualified as a fully-fledged barista and after gaining even more experience became the in-house barista trainer for franchise group, The Coffee Guy. Amazingly enough Nicky set herself a monthly budget and already has about 40 of her own brushes, up to 50 lipsticks and lots more in her makeup kit. She was also doing friends makeup after watching tutorials on YouTube but never earned any money from doing it. So after 10 years of being in hospitality, Nicky took time off to think about her life, where her passion lay, and how she could make money from doing it! The answer was obvi- ously makeup, and she remembered that one of her friends had done a makeup artistry course at SRA and loved it. Nicky is now enjoying life as a full-time student at SRA, loves the warm, friendly and encouraging environment at the Academy, and is thriving in the creative world she is part of each day. Her ultimate dream is to work on film and tele- vision sets, but realises that this won t happen overnight and is pre- pared to knock on doors and offer her makeup artistry services free of charge if need be. And anyone who employs Nicky gets a huge bonus - she makes an amazing cup of coffee! To find out more about SRA, phone 09 379-9230 orgoto www.sramakeup.com. Building skills shortage looming Demand for skilled labour in the building and construction indus- try could outstrip that seen in the boom years leading up to 2007. Early indications are that New Zealand needs more than double the number of workers currently working in the industry in the medium term. The boom and bust nature of our building industry is again rearing its head. This time how- ever, the boom is advancing quickly and dramatically; this won t be a gradual increase in activity as seen in previous cycles. Rebuilding in Canterbury, leaky- homes remedial work and pent-up housing shortages are set to suck- up every last building professional in the country," Ruma Karaitiana, chief executive of Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation says. "Although this news is a relief for many builders, it poses serious challenges for industry training. Nationally, the number of people completing building trade qualifications has decreased by nearly 40 percent since 2007. Quite simply, we do not currently have enough people in training to meet New Zealand s future build- ing needs, Mr Karaitiana says. The BCITO is doing everything it can to raise awareness in the building industry of the import- ance to train now. We have young people ready to start work, but the reality is that many builders are still doing it tough, and are strug- gling to hire apprentices. We fear by the time builders are ready to hire again, it will be too late.
