Samantha Morris, studying Travel and Tourism at the Crown Institute of Studies, was one of many students who applied for the scholarship. Out of the several students interviewed, New Caledo- nia Tourism was impressed with Samantha s enthusiasm. When interviewing students for our scholarship we look for certain qualities such as strong communi- cation skills, a positive attitude and passion for the industry, says Simon Duffy, general manager of New Caledonia Tourism. Samantha demonstrated all of these qualities, expressing a desire to pursue a career in the airlines or the retail travel sector. We look for- ward to having her as part of the NCT team. General manager of New Caledo- nia Tourism in New Zealand Simon Duffy founded the scholarship pro- gramme in 2006 in conjunction with the Crown Institute, to provide opportunities to burgeoning travel professionals as well as to promote New Caledonia. He was impressed by Crown s professionalism and its graduates rate of success finding employment post-study. It was a former flatmate of Samantha who mentioned her posi- tive experience at Crown Institute; the same person had gone on to pur- sue a successful career in the airlines. That was reason enough for Samantha to go on a visit of Crown. After visiting the school and being shown around, there was no doubt that this was where I wanted to pursue my studies as I had a very positive feeling from the tutors and staff , Samantha says. Samantha will undertake work experience at the New Caledonia Tourism and receive $1000 towards her course costs. 'So what is it actually?' By VIV KELLY I ve had so many enquiries asking what life coaching is exactly, I thought I d explain it more fully... not from a pushing our business perspective, but from a know what resources are out there per- spective. Obviously if you come to Momentum, that s a bonus for us! Some of the most frequent questions: How is coaching different from counselling / therapy? One of the key differences is that Life Coaching works from present into future: Looking at where you are now and where you want to be. A coach is trained to assist in examining beliefs and behaviours, clarifying values, identifying strategies and plans of action to facilitate client achieve- ment. It is the structure and pro- cess moving you towards the results you want. Yes, sometimes, we need to start with working out what you want first! Counselling often works from present into past; processing, analysing, healing. Who would benefit from coaching? It s actually easier to answer that from the who wouldn t ben- efit angle. In reality coaching isn t for everyone. Sometimes it is more appropriate for someone to deeply process and heal the past before being fully able to focus on cre- ating an inspiring future. Counselling has a more rel- evant place for that need. I have been known to refer to uncoachable people. What I mean is, sometimes even though a per- son may genuinely believe they want to grow and move forward in some areas of their lives, they are actually quite happy being miser- able. Literally, there is too much ben- efit in their current (stuck) situ- ation to really commit to shifting it. Someone needs to be willing to move forward in order to be coa- chable . In a nutshell, those that really benefit are the people who are committed to creating even more success for themselves. Of course it s not always easy -- if it were, they d have it already. But the key is willingness . What sorts of things do people seek coaching on? At the risk of being annoyingly general, anything that they want more success / confidence / fulfil- ment in. Some examples are career change or advancement; health and wellbeing from weight loss / stress management to work- life balance; relationships and communication including enhanc- ing existing relationships with partners, parenting and colleagues; attracting new ones; building confidence; team dynam- ics; and even how to make the most of retirement ... you get the idea. It is a positive, powerful and purposeful construction of your life as you would like it to be.
