Advertisement Hamsters are famous for being good at saving things until they really need them. Well, think hamster, think Christmas, and you've got Hampsta, the first Christmas savings plan of its kind anywhere in the world. Hampsta grew out of a concern that people who entrusted their savings to certain schemes were left unprotected when things went wrong. From its small beginnings, helping people to save securely and get full value for items for their Christmas table, Hampsta has grown into a shopping system that is simple to understand and operate, a safe and trusted way to save for the things your family want -- shopping with 21 of New Zealand's biggest and best-loved retailers. General manager Gary Alway says the key to Hampsta's success is the protection it affords members. "Every cent you save goes into an independent Public Trust account, to be loaded onto your own personal eftpos-style card so that when it comes to Christmas you are in control -- spending your own money on whatever you want.'' Under New Zealand consumer law, savers have little protection against hamper or voucher schemes if that business goes into receivership -- which is why the trust account is so important to the Hampsta concept. It's the first in the world to protect members' funds through a Crown-owned trust organisation. "We don't handle your money or have access to it,'' Gary says, "nor do we deliver boxes or vouchers. We give you an eftpos card to shop with at New Zealand's leading retail stores where you can get the best choice and the best value.'' The stores are all trusted names in apparel, sports goods, home entertainment, appliances, homewares, food, liquor, toys, cosmetics, jewellery and much more. "We're thrilled by the support given to us by the major retailers,'' Gary observes, pointing out that the Hampsta cards can be used from December 1 right through until January 10 -- including Christmas, New Year and all those summer sales. "It's a great assistance during a time of real pressure on family finances,'' Gary says. "After Christmas, people tell us it's the best they've ever had.'' The minimum weekly saving is $15 per week, and you can start anytime. It's simple to join -- call the freephone 0800 364 364, text 'sub' to 364 or go to www.hampsta.co.nz. *If you join now you'll get $50 added to your Hampsta account -- offer lasts until April 29th. The choice is yours next Christmas! *See www.hampsta.co.nz for Terms and conditions. The two major candid- ates for the Auckland Central electorate are already battling it out on screen. National MP Nikki Kaye, who won the seat at the last general elec- tion, took on Labour list MP Jacinda Ardern on Martyn Bomber'' Brad- bury's Citizen A show. During the discussion Ms Kaye said National could form a majority government without minor party support, citing her party's consist- ently high poll ratings. I think some of the numbers are showing it's very difficult, but we could govern alone.'' But Ms Ardern, who didn't get a chance to comment about the issue on the show, says that's a big call to make. In an MMP environ- ment in particular, I don't think that's a pre- diction anyone should be making a call on.'' The pair also traded barbs about the inner city rail loop. The next six months are about how we fund that project,'' Ms Kaye said. I think we have said it's a priority.'' But Ms Ardern feels senior government figures don't share her opponent's enthusiasm for the rail loop. What they have said in Parliament are very different things to what Nikki is saying,'' she said on the programme.
