Innovative Early Childhood Service Unique facility implementing the Reggio Emilia Approach from Italy 1438 Dominion Road Mt Roskill (09) 620 0817 www.peterpanchildcare.co.nz Education& trainingAdvertising Feature Peter Pan: Meaningful, rewarding childcare Nuturing learning: 'Hand in hand we achieve' sums up a typical day at Peter Pan Childcare. Children get most out of learning when they initiate and discover things for them- selves -- the very embodiment of the approach employed by Peter Pan Childcare. Established three and a half years ago to provide a meaningful child care and learning environment for pre- schoolers, Peter Pan embraces the Reggio Emilia approach to children s learn- ing. This Italian-originated and now widely accepted world- wide movement teaches that an environment conducive to discovery is where children learn best. In Peter Pan s case that means both the classroom -- its look and feel and resources -- and the endless opportunities the children are offered to express themselves. The Reggio philosophy believes that learning comes from a three-way partnership of parents, teachers and the children. Within this friendly, collaborative learning environment, featuring lots of natural materials such as wood, sand, clay and stone, the children at Peter Pan work on projects emerging from their own ideas and interests. The environment is full of objects that provoke dis- cussion and ideas -- Peter Pan teachers have learned to be full-time magpies when it comes to collecting materials. They are also grateful to local companies who provide many recycled materials for projects. The foyer at Peter Pan s Mt Roskill Centre showcases the children s project work -- it s a fascinating gallery of art and installation! Modern information and communications technology is also included in the class- room. Of course Peter Pan is a place where all children s nurturing needs are met -- for example, an onsite chef provides wholesome meals with lots of variety. The centres are divided into baby/toddler and pre- school groups with separate age-appropriate facilities. At four years the children embark on a transition-to- school programme to prepare them for primary school. The Mt Roskill Centre is located at 1438 Dominion Rd; there are two centres in Manurewa, and in July a new Peter Pan opens in St Lukes. Peter Pan Childcare is open Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 5.45pm. Phone 6200-817 or visit www.peterpanchildcare.co.nz.
