The work, a joint investigation between Auckland Transport, the Auckland Council, the New Zealand Transport Agency, KiwiRail and the Auckland Inter- national Airport, will identify what is needed over the next 30 years. The contract has been awarded to GHD, an international engineer- ing, consultancy and architecture firm and it plans to draw on experi- ence from similar stra- tegies in Hong Kong and London. Progress around pro- tecting routes is expected to be under way by the end of the year. Auckland Transport chief executive David Warburton says the study will give certainty about what transport infrastructure is needed and when it needs to be built. The investigations will look at how to move freight in the area as well as people, as the air- port gateway area is sig- nificant for Auckland's economic growth.'' The number of pass- engers which pass through the airport is projected to grow from 13.4 million a year to 24 million in 2025 and 36 million by 2050.
