Another cup for a good cause Good cause: Showcause is aiming to win the famous Auckland Cup today. Photo: GRAHAME COX By TUREI MACKEY It just keeps getting better for in-form racehorse Showcause and his owners. And today, the champagne could be popping again. Showcause won the Avon- dale Cup on February 19 and is set to race in the Auckland Cup, with a prize packet of $1 million. He also won the New Zea- land Cup and the City of Auckland Cup this season. Garry Bates, general man- ager of Henderson s The Falls restaurant and Rosebank Business Association chief executive Mike Gibson, belong to a syndicate which owns the champion gelding. Bates says winning the Avondale Cup gave him mixed emotions as the race wasn t held at its traditional race- course. The Avondale Jockey Club has suspended racing at the west Auckland venue for the season in order to sort out its finances. It was a real thrill because I have been a member of the Avondale Jockey club for nearly 30 years, he says. But it was sad it wasn t held on course because Avon- dale is a wonderful racecourse, so hopefully in due time we will be racing there again, he says. First time owner Mike Gibson says the whole experi- ence has been like a dream. If you put it in the context of what Showcause has won it is amazing that a horse has won so much in only a 14-week span, he says. He credits everyone from trainer Frank Ritchie to vet- eran jockey Darryl Bradley. It is like a Formula One team. Everything has to fall into line like a good engine, a good driver and a good crew. And Showcause has a good engine, a good driver and a good crew. Bates says a victory today could see Showcause starting a campaign for the biggest race in Australasia. If we go well in the Auck- land Cup then the Melbourne Cup does come into conten- tion, he says. Right now he is qualified to enter the Melbourne Cup but doesn t have the stake money. If he wins the Auckland Cup he will. Mr Bates says the Showcause syndicate will pledge $25,000 to the Racing for Christchurch appeal if the horse wins the Auckland Cup. They have already donated $5000 to the appeal. Go to www.central leader.co.nz to see Showcause win the 2011 Avondale Cup.
