Photo: JASON OXENHAM By SCOTT MORGAN Pois will be twirling and chil- dren dancing when the Rich- mond Road School kapa haka group performs at the annual Pasifika Festival. Sisters Fuatino and Aulo Barclay are just two members of the 70-strong group who will show off their talents in front of an estimated 200,000 people. It's pretty cool and excit- ing,'' Fuatino says. We sing some old songs and one of our teachers makes some up.'' Tutor TK Wise says it can be a challenge organising the large group of children aged between six and 11 years old. But he says hard work put in during the last few weeks will pay off on the day. It's going very well. We're motivating them and trying to get them to work as a group.'' The group has already performed in front of a large crowd at the Grey Lynn Festi- val last year. Proud dad Andrew Barclay says it's fantastic his daugh- ters can take part in the event. They love it. It's part of who they are.'' The annual festival will be held at Western Springs Park on March 12 with more than 300 stalls, 10 Pacific Island villages and 12 stages. People who attend Pasifika are also being encouraged to attend White Night Auckland Arts Festival events, which run late into the evening after the festival has wrapped up for the day. The events, which range from exhibitions to dem- onstrations, take place in the city, Ponsonby and on Karangahape Rd. Meanwhile, four art exhibitions that link in with the festival are also taking place next week. The exhibitions, featuring artists from the Pacific Islands, take place from Monday to March 12 at the Aotea Centre in the city. Visit www.aucklandcouncil. govt.nz/events for more information on Pasifika and www.aucklandfestival.co.nz for details of White Nights events.
