Phone call a hoax An emergency phone call about a car which had crashed into a roadside power supply box has turned out to be a hoax. Fire Service communi- cations centre shift man- ager Jaron Phillips says police, fire crews, ambu- lance staff and Vector staff turned up at the address given, which was near New North Rd and Mt Albert Rd, shortly after 6pm last Wednesday. When we got there, there was no sign of an accident. It has been deemed to be a malicious call. It s a waste of time. Photo: JASON OXENHAM By RHIANNON HORRELL A one-off charity auction is being held tomorrow night to improve children s lives. The Auckland Sexual Abuse Help Foundation is putting on the event, titled Colour Me Purple, which will see exciting items up for grabs. Money raised from the event will go towards a programme for preschool children called We Can Keep Safe, which is taught to help children distinguish between safe and unsafe situations. Help fundraising and market- ing manager Alison Kovach says 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the foundation which is non-profit. Help has been running since the early 1980s. It s a personal safety programme which is taught in preschools. It teaches kids to recognise situations they feel uncomfortable with. It s about teaching them to express themselves and feel comfortable describing things. It s an early prevention programme. The six-week programme is provided in 20 Auckland preschools. Entertainer and comedian Michele A Court is set to host the auction and says it s a cause close to her heart. It s always nice to do a show where the audience support the cause. There ll be some fantas- tic bargains. I m always open to doing things which benefit women and children. Administrator and organiser Maureen Harvey was inspired to create the event and is excited to see it come to fru- ition. She says charity items will include a Shortland Street experience, a day s fishing for four people, a 12-month family pass to Academy Cinemas, a return trip on the Overlander or a Skoda car for the weekend. Ms Harvey is hoping the night will raise $20,000. Colour Me Purple takes place March 3 at the Fables, 8 George St, Parnell. It starts at 6.30pm and tickets are $30 per person. Call Miss Kovach on 623-1700 or 027-417-7747 to buy tickets.
