This year Onehunga High School has set up an NCEA Academy through its Adult Edu- cation programme. This programme, which runs from Monday to Wednesday evenings, is a first step for learners back into education, or for those wanting to improve on the credits they have already gained. ACE co-ordinator Linda Melrose says this is a wonderful oppor- tunity for local residents to embark on a range of study options. Credits are divided into eight-week blocks with each block offering two to four credits. The programme is so flexible, it allows you to choose what blocks to do and when to do them. You can also choose to study up to three subjects per block with the internal assessment component. Linda says that this is a fantastic way to study if you work or have other commitments -- because of its flexibility and because it is right next door at your local school. The government sig- nalled in late 2009 that school ACE programmes would now have to focus on priority learners and those who have literacy and numeracy needs. Onehunga High School has developed the NCEA Academy through exten- sive consultation with these learners. Although the focus is on improving quali- fications for further employment, others may wish to attend so they can take a first step back into education. This is an easy, sup- portive way to try out being a student again. All teachers are trained high school teachers and information can be provided on pathways and further options. Call the ACE office at Onehunga High School on 636-9060 or email email@example.com for more information. www.msltraining.co.nz Manukau and Onehunga CALL NOW to find out how our practical hands- on Hospitality Course will help you get into the exciting world of hospitality.
