Education& trainingAdvertising Feature Helping youth to make it on their own Yvonne Godfrey: Helping youth to prepare for adult life. MIOMO stands for Mak- ingItOnMyOwn--an intensive live-in experi- ence for 17 to 24 year olds who have left school. MIOMO is a 10-day programme for 12 young adults from every walk of life. Students discover the real world beyond mum and dad and the comforts of home. Hosted at a well- equipped facility in Albany, MIOMO stu- dents learn to cook, clean and take personal res- ponsibility. MIOMO covers essen- tial life skills such as fit- ness taught by Vilisini Lisipeki, resident house father and personal trainer, and time man- agement from Robyn Pearce of gettingagrip. com. More than 20 experts in their fields teach other important topics such as CV and interview skills, budget- ing and goal setting. Students also receive one-on-one mentoring for 90 days after the pro- gramme, plus there is support and many leadership-style events are available for MIOMO graduates. MIOMO makes life crystal clear: The brutal reality of bad decisions and the incredible possibilities of good choices. Students are not told what to do -- infor- mation is laid out with logic to support it. MIOMO is the brain- child of Yvonne Godfrey, who taught a range of skills for five years on a volunteer basis to youth making the transition to adulthood. She was amazed at how badly equipped young people were for the adult world. Yvonne believes that there is a worldwide problem of how to empower the next gener- ation to lead. On MIOMO we equip young people to think, speak and act as adults. It doesn't work to have one foot in the adult world and one hand in Dad's pocket.'' Warehouse Stationery supports the programme through scholarships. Their HR staff also assist students develop an excellent CV and train them in interview skills. The Fletcher Building Employee Educational Fund also provides scholarships for their employees' young adults. After 10 intensive, fun-filled days gradu- ation is an exciting cul- mination. Students speak for about seven minutes to their families and friends on how they will apply what they have learnt to their futures. Parents also have their own session to help them lead their young adults better. MIOMO courses will be held on February 9-19 and March 16-26 and a free leadership day for the public is on April 16. Information: phone Yvonne on 413-9777, text 027 249-5444 or visit www.miomo.co.nz.
