The community centre started off by taking three of the five pres- tigious YMCA national awards. It also received the Y That Catches the Eye award to acknowledge free community classes held in Rocket Park dur- ing February last year. Gaining a highly commended award at the Recreation Associ- ation Awards in the outstanding facility category was also a bonus. And the centre's weekend of community passion, which saw an entire weekend of Christmas cel- ebration activities, earned them the Strengthening Families award. After witnessing such an incredible level of participation from the community there was no doubt that the Mt Albert com- munity was left passionate about their neighbourhood and feeling a true sense of belonging,'' says cen- tre manager Jill Gibson, who was also awarded the YMCA's centre manager of the year. It came following her national YMCA Leading by Example award, which recognised her team dedication and commit- ment. Jill says she and her team are just doing their job and follow- ing YMCA's vision to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities.
