Photo: JASON OXENHAM By HANNAH SPYKSMA The chance of a lifetime has come around for one devoted footballer whose hard work is finally pay- ing off. His Rhythm and Vines ticket was sold at the last minute to allow for more training and early nights are the norm for Epsom resident Thomas Doyle, but selection for an elite training camp in London has made it all worthwhile. The 18-year-old is one of four players from Oceania picked for the Nike Global Chance trials. He is in London competing with 100 others for eight places in a year-long academy. Thomas says although the camp is daunting, a positive attitude should get him through. I've got nothing to lose. I'm just going to match whatever the other competitors bring.'' It is this outlook which coach and mentor Danny Hay says makes the young athlete stand out. The former All Whites captain has kept an eye on Thomas since he started playing football at Sacred Heart College at the age of 14. You could see the boy had talent, though it's really his work ethic and attitude that puts him in good stead. He's still got a bit of developing to do, but Thomas is really willing to work hard,'' Hay says. And he is going to have to work extra hard to be on par with other foot- ballers from around the world. As well as playing a faster game this will be the first opportunity for the defender to really play at a professional level. Despite being an underdog, Thomas is optimistic about his chances. For the trials I just focused on consistency. I just try to be focused for every single minute of every game. I've got the opportunity, now I just have to take it.'' The school-leaver is hoping to stay in Eng- land no matter what happens and has some club visits lined up. He says he is thankful to his parents for their support throughout high school and for the early nights which are now paying off.
