But getting the Auck- land Council to commit $19 million to help build the $35m facility could be an uphill battle. Webster, a Mt Eden resident, says it makes sense to build the centre, which would include a new velodrome, in Auck- land because many of the country s top cyclists are based here. It s got the climate, population size and international airport, which is a biggie when you ve got to travel to so many places overseas. At present, New Zea- land cyclists often spend long periods of time training at the velo- drome in Invercargill. However, Citizens and Ratepayers co-leader Chris Fletcher says it s difficult to see how the council can afford to con- tribute to the project when rates are already predicted to rise by between 4 and 5 percent. It s a luxury item. We ve got to prioritise the existing level of ser- vice. At its final meeting last year, the council narrowly passed a resol- ution to fund a report into the feasibility of hosting a velodrome at Trusts Stadium. Mrs Fletcher and eight of her council colleagues voted against the move. I really wouldn t want to see the sporting com- munity thinking it s a done deal. We really can t afford to progress this project where there are other priorities -- unless money falls out of the sky. Trusts Stadium chief executive Brian Blake says it s a great oppor- tunity for the new coun- cil to make a positive statement to reflect what the supercity is about. A number of other cit- ies are also bidding to host the centre. The council will dis- cuss the issue again at tomorrow night s meet- ing. The bid process closes on February 11.
