Photo: JASON OXENHAM Months of gruelling training and a simple diet of fish, kumara and green vegetables has seen Teneka Hyndman crowned Ms Physique not once, but twice. The Mt Roskill resi- dent travelled to the United States last year, winning the Ms Phys- ique category at the Natural Universe and Natural Olympia compe- titions. She says the compe- titions forbid the use of drugs or growth hor- mones to improve physi- cal appearance. Girls can get way too big. These competitions are not about drugs, they're about skill and competing.'' The 31-year-old's de- sire for more competition is part of the reason she travelled to the United States. I've won so many New Zealand titles. I thought: What next?' This is the next step up.'' But her success came as a huge surprise. I was thinking it'd be nice to get a place in the top three.'' Hyndman won the category for women 1.6 metres and shorter, before defeating those in the masters division and women over 1.6m category to take out the Ms Physique title. The personal trainer, who works at Les Mills in the city and is 1.6m tall, says she had to get down to 8 percent body fat for the events, when normally her body fat ranges from 10 to 16 percent. Hyndman also had to stick to a strict diet and exercise regime. I've been training almost every day since March.'' She says a symmetri- cal look helped her win the titles after thinning down a little in the lower body and bulking up her arms and shoulders. It's a science. I had to build the muscle without overdoing it or you lose muscle.'' She has relaxed her strict diet now, with no competitions until March, but Hyndman says it isn't that easy to get back into eating fast food. I tried a burger after the competition but couldn't stomach the bread or sauce. I hadn't eaten bread in six months.'' As for her next chal- lenge, Hyndman hopes to compete at the Natural World Championships in Prague.
