Photos: JASON OXENHAM By CARLY TAWHIAO Winter wonderland: It takes about 15 minutes to apply the snow which is made from non-toxic foam and is used in many films. Undisturbed it can last up to six hours or up to half an hour when the kids play in it. White Christmas: The snow-laden pohutukawa trees of Kohia Terrace School. The Christmas pohutukawa are in full bloom at Kohia Terrace School. But it's the unlikely addition of some fake snow that got the children into the festive spirit. Hundreds of Auckland chil- dren got to see their first white Christmas thanks to special effects expert and Big Buddy mentor Jason Durey. The trees and playgrounds of 10 schools were given 1200 litres of non-toxic foam by the father-of-three before Christmas to create a winter wonderland as part of the Big Buddy Christmas White Out. I thought it would be a good thing to do for kids who don't necessarily have a lot to cheer about at Christmas. It's fantastic to see the kids go crazy in it, laughing and singing. It's been a great morning. It makes you feel a bit better about life.'' Through the Big Buddy programme the Epsom resi- dent has been mentoring fatherless boys for nearly three years. For 10 years the organis- ation has matched hundreds of seven to 12-year-old boys with carefully screened men who are able to spend a few hours a week with them. Mr Durey says his 11-year- old buddy Bradley is a great kid. We love experiencing things together that opens both our eyes. Boys' stuff like building stuff, climbing Rangitoto, snowboarding or fishing,'' Mr Durey says. There's an epidemic of fatherless boys. There's not enough positive male role models.'' Kohia Terrace associate principal Julie Glasson says with all the snowy Christmas action Santa Claus was needed. Jason and Big Buddy have created a magical world for our children to enjoy. Santa couldn't resist and dropped in early to say, Merry Christmas, ho ho ho, here's the snow'.'' Other schools to enjoy the snowy treatment this year include Otahuhu Primary School, Papatoetoe North School, Te Papapa School, Don Buck School, Massey Pri- mary, Lincoln Heights School, Henderson North Pri- mary School and Henderson Primary School.
