Photo: FELICITY REID Dennis Grennell is the face of older athletes but he's also an inspiration on the playing field, in the pulpit and now in paperback. The 77-year-old has been a life-long athlete, a fulltime church pastor, a committed family man and co-founder of an award-winning active ageing pro- gramme for the elderly. But his latest venture is an autobio- graphical book called Never Give Up. The Mt Albert resident says it is a way to tie together his vast and varied experiences. I crack it open with humour and honesty.'' The book covers the ups and downs of his life from the early years in the Chatham Islands, to growing up in the south, eloping with his wife of 52 years and the joys and pain of family life. It also touches on the death of his close friend in a train accident and the resulting two-week drinking binge which was pivotal in his decision to become a committed Christian. Even in his role as a fulltime pastor for more than 20 years his love for sport was evident. They joke I could name an All Blacks team faster than the 12 Apostles,'' he says. Mr Grennell trained to be a fitness instructor at 68 and actively promotes the Never2old Active Ageing pro- gramme across the city. It is aimed at those aged 60 and over and introduces a range of activities including weight training and resist- ance exercises. Mr Grennell remains an active sportsman having competed at this year's Masters Games in track, rowing, badminton, team events, snooker and the 5km walk. His most recent venture was to take a group, with an average age of 70, walking on the Hollyford Track in the South Island. He was also honoured at the 2010 Fitness New Zealand Awards for his mentoring. Never Give Up is available by call- ing 846-6437 or email grennell@sling shot.co.nz.
