Photo: JASON OXENHAM By RHIANNON HORRELL Up to 3000 children will have some- thing to smile about this Christmas thanks to a huge effort to pull together gifts and toys for those in need. The Central Leader and Sal- vation Army 2010 Christmas Appeal has wrapped up and items donated by readers have been added to those collected by the army. Soft toys, balls, books, puzzles and hand-crafted wooden trucks are among items received. Army volunteers started sorting through the gifts on Monday to cre- ate 800 to 900 hampers. Community ministries director Caryn Daly says army staff have been gearing up for Christmas since September and are coping with high levels of demand. We are buying more this year than before,'' Ms Daly says. But the public continue to be generous even in these economic times and it is very much appreciated.'' She says the army also works with agencies like the Auckland District Health Board, Barnardos and the Child Cancer Foundation to identify families who could use a hamper at this time of year. The hampers will be distributed next week. Volunteers from the army's Auck- land City Corps Youth Group spent Monday chipping in to help. They have a lot of fun doing it,'' Ms Daly says. Long-term volunteer and toy room co-ordinator Gina Richards has been sorting items into age appropriate gifts. Collection points have also been set up at Auckland Skids centres -- Safe Kids in Daily Supervision -- and director of operations Bev Parsons is in the process of collecting donations and dropping them off to the Salvation Army. It's mainly toys, the box is overflowing. The kids have been very generous.''
