The Suddenly In Charge' tutorial is designed to engage women in boat safety and provide the skills and knowledge to help them deal with emergencies on-board a vessel at sea such as a man overboard, fire or medical problem. Each course involves an emergency and safety equipment overview, a theory section to cover off rules, regulations and markers and a practical com- ponent that includes a rope throw, tying up to a wharf/jetty and fender replacement/usage. Dean Lawrence, CEO of Coastguard Northern Region says the Suddenly in Charge evenings have been developed by women for women to ensure they address the key areas and questions most asked by women who may not know their way about boats very well. Each course is delivered by experienced and knowledgeable tutors and offers a safe environment where we can introduce the basic skills and know- ledge needed to take charge of a vessel in the unlikely event something does occur. We want women to build confidence and be proactive while they're out on the water,'' says Dean. Each class is limited to 30 participants to ensure all of those in attendance have an opportunity to fully engage with the tutor and get as much benefit as they can. The next Suddenly In Charge course is on Thursday, February 3, 2011 at the Auckland Marine Rescue Centre in Mechanics Bay. To book call 0508 RESCUE (737 283), email firstname.lastname@example.org or register online at www.coastguard.org.nz.
