Dad beats pain to run 52-day race Striding out: Onehunga resident Dharbhasana Lynn ran almost 5000km in the Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race in New York. Photo: JASON OXENHAM By SCOTT MORGAN Believing in himself helped athlete Dharbhasana Lynn complete almost 52 days of running in some of the hottest weather New York has ever seen. The Onehunga resident is the first New Zealander to compete in the Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race, held in suburb of Queens. He finished just hours before the race wrapped up in a time of 51 days, 13 hours and 17 minutes and was one of only six runners to com- plete it. That translates into almost 5000km, running 18 hours a day in 43 degree Celsius heat around an 883 metre block that saw him repeatedly pass a school, businesses and people s homes. Lynn says a hamstring injury almost forced him to pull out after 36 days. I had to walk for eight days. This put the 34-year-old about 48 hours behind the 52 day cutoff point. But rather than pull out, Lynn decided to give running another try. Something happened and I gave it one last go despite the injury. It was awesome to finish. Lynn says he drew on the teach- ing of Indian mystic and race foun- der Sri Chinmoy to help him over- come the pain. If you remain cheerful and happy, other difficulties subside. That s what happened with the injury. However he did pay a physical price during the race. I had to sit down in the shower because of my swollen ankles. After two or three hours running you start to loosen up. He also went from 72kg down to 58kg and had to rest for weeks before he was strong enough to return to New Zealand last month. A diet of mainly raw foods kept the father-of-one going throughout the race and he wore out 15 pairs of shoes. Lynn could tell the time of day by people leaving for work in the morn- ing and coming home at night. There were also water fights and icecream trucks to dodge during the really hot days, although for much of it he was too wrapped up in the race to notice what was going on. For the most part we went unnoticed as well, but some locals look forward to the race every year. It brings a safety to the area. Lynn says he ll be back for the race again next year, but hopes to do an event in New Zealand at some point soon. It d be great to do something that inspires people to be fit, healthy and active.
