Delanie is 10 years old. When she was 9 months old, she learnt to walk, so we were all very excited that she could do this at such a young age, however soon after, she was always falling over and bumping into things. It seems like she continuously had bruises, lumps and bumps. After some time my mother and grandmother suggested that we take her to an optometrist when she was old enough to get her eyes checked. So when she was 2.5 years old we took her to an Optom- etrist who discovered there was something wrong, so he referred us on to an Ophthal- mologist. After a full exami- nation, it was discovered that Delanie had perfect vision in her left eye 6/6 and had almost no vision in her right eye, 6/60. She was diagnosed with Amblyopia, secondary to hyperopic anisometropia and astigmatism. From the age of 4.5 years to 7 years we tried patching and glasses, but as Delanie's vision was so bad in her bad eye, she used to get very upset and frustrated, and this turned into a daily battle. We were told when she was 7 that her eyes were visually mature, so not much else could be done for her, and there wasn't any further tech- nology currently available in New Zealand to help her. This year (2010) I found unaided vision in her left eye is 6/6, right eye is 6/120, and aided vision in her right eye is 6/60. I was even more worried. A friend suggested we try a behavioural optom- etrist, who recommended we contact EyeRight Vision Recovery, who are based in Epsom. Within 2 days Delanie was able to come along and meet the staff at EyeRight Vision Recovery. The lovely staff at EyeRight, are very passion- ate and enthusiastic about this exciting new method of restoring vision, and cust- omised a training programme for Delanie, we were very excited to try it as they told us it was possible they could restore her vision within approximately 6 months of training. EyeRight Vision Recovery training is a proven method of restoring your eyesight with- out requiring physical contact with your eyes. We are now 4 weeks into the training (have had 14 training sessions) and Delanie's vision has improved 7 fold from 6/120 to 6/40 - which is incredible! Delanie has been struggling at school for a few years now, she has been having extra tuition to help improve her grades. This term I have had com- ments from several teachers who have noticed a huge improvement in her self confidence. She even shared a speech to her class this week, which is something she never had the confidence to do in the past. I feel the training she is receiving from EyeRight is a contributing factor to this new found confidence. Delanie has a long way to go with many more training ses- sions ahead, and we are both very excited about the future. 3283578AC 391 NEILSON ST, PENROSE MT SMART STADIUM END Beautiful Gift Ideas Stunning Artificial Christmas Trees Elegant Accessories to decorate your home One off samples, seconds, excess stock. Photo: JASON OXENHAM Books for Starship kids By RHIANNON HORRELL Festive songs and laughter proved to be a highlight of the Starship Foundation's Christmas party this month -- which saw dozens of free books handed out as part of the Fair- fax First Books scheme. The effort is part of an initiative where more than 1200 books are dis- tributed to Kids First, the Starship Foundation, Auckland City Mission and Ronald McDonald House in Graf- ton to lift the spirits of children who may be sick or in need. Claire Cendana was at the party with her daughter Valentina Saavedra-Cendana, 3, who was enjoying the music and food. She's got chronic eczema. We've always been in and out of hospital,'' Mrs Cendana says. Starship's patients were among those to receive books from the Kapai series, which feature the adventures of Kapai the Kiwi and focus on New Zea- land culture, sport and recreation. The books are also provided to chil- dren in decile one and two kindergartens around New Zealand to improve literacy. Fairfax Media group manager of sales and marketing Sandra King says it's wonderful to be able to brighten Christmas for those who will spend the festive season in hospital. The Kapai series has brought joy to thousands of children around New Zealand and we are thrilled to be able to give this experience to even more children at Christmas through key organisations that do a wonderful job with children.'' Starship Foundation chief executive Andrew Young says the books are a real treat for patients. The annual Starship party is hosted for its young patients and their famil- ies by the Starship Foundation and its partners Barfoot and Thompson, Mer- cury Energy, Air New Zealand, Sky Television, EB Games, Westaff and a number of television, radio and sport- ing celebrities.
