Photo: JASON OXENHAM By SCOTT MORGAN The Christmas spirit is alive and well on Sandringham Rd thanks to John and Faye Peel. The Peels have once again decorated their property with lights, a snow- making machine, laser light show and model train to celebrate the festive season for the sixth year running. But the display hasn't always been so spectacular. It started with a string of lights that we put up because we had grand- children coming over from Sydney. We thought we would do something special for them and it evolved from there.'' For the last two years the Sandring- ham residents have also participated in the Community Spirit Christmas Lights Competition run by the Good- win Realty Group. Other entrants from Mt Albert, Pt Chevalier, Avondale and Mt Eden are also taking part. The pair won in 2008, but Mr Peel isn't worried that he missed out on a prize last year. It's not about winning, it's about getting the community involved and keeping that magic alive for the kids.'' His grandchildren are returning for their regular Christmas holiday and Mr Peel says there's always plenty of interest in the display from residents. We have people stopping outside even before the lights are turned on. Some people seem to have followed us every year and say: You've moved this or shifted that'.'' There are 20 entrants in this year's competition. Goodwin Realty Group general man- ager Catherine Goodwin says the organisation started the event in 2007 to inspire the community to create some magic in their own neighbour- hood. What better time than the festive season to connect with your neighbours and bring joy and wonder to our children.'' Voting forms are available from Goodwin Realty offices or can be downloaded from www.community spirit.co.nz and hand delivered. Voting closes on December 20 and the winners will be announced at a prizegiving function on December 21 at Ray White Mt Albert. Photos of houses are available on the website and each entrant has been provided with a voting code. The prizes include Christmas hampers, Motat family passes and a Royal Albert bone china vase. Go to www.centralleader.co.nz to see a photo gallery of some of the Christmas lights in this year's compe- tition.
