Tough alcohol rules likely By SCOTT MORGAN A strong stance will be taken by the Auckland Council on liquor reforms as the government con- siders changes to the law. Parts of the Alcohol Reform Bill that affect the council include managing and policing liquor licences, dealing with licensing and community trusts and introducing liquor bans. But some councillors favour expressing concern over other alcohol related issues, including the drinking age, alcohol pricing, advertising and blood alcohol limits for drivers. Maungakiekie-Tamaki council- lor Richard Northey told the regional development and operations committee last week of his concern about the cheap price of alcohol at some off-licence liquor stores. Sometimes the price is so low that a poor person or young per- son with very little money can get beyond control with less than $10. He also favours giving com- munities the chance to reintroduce licensing trusts if they had previously chosen to scrap them. I know because of the Waita- kere and Portage Trusts liquor issues are usually less severe than in my ward and other parts of the region. Community safety forum chair- man councillor George Wood said the council had to work with local boards and other concerned par- ties to help come up with a sol- ution. We ve got to make sure we re all on the same song sheet. He says giving police the chance to issue infringement notices and raising the age limit for purchasing alcohol are measures he supports. Albert-Eden-Roskill councillor Cathy Casey says the police have to be given the resources to enforce the law. Orakei councillor Cameron Brewer warned against unethical off-licence owners trying to renew their licences before next year s Rugby World Cup.
