Photo: JASON OXENHAM By CARLY TAWHIAO A collection of stories from people affected by the police raids of October 15, 2007, will be launched in Auckland on Saturday. The book, entitled The Day the Raids Came: Stories of Survival and Resistance to the State Terror Raids, contains a glimpse of the experiences of those directly affected by Operation 8. The terror raids will go down in New Zealand history as one of the greatest blunders of all time,'' book promoter and launch organiser Ryan Bodman says. Police didn't push the terrorist charges through because the Solicitor- General said it was a no-go but for the people involved it is still very real,'' he says. The stories are recounted from a cross-section of people throughout the country and display discrepancies in the way different people were treated. Mr Bodman says the book also highlights perception of a surveillance culture becoming more common and normalised which is also terrifying''. People weren't aware of the amount of bugging going on. It's sort of like James Bond. I'm not a conspiracy the- orist but that's pretty ridiculous. This trend needs to be combated.'' The book's editor Valerie Morse says the work was published in an attempt to put real stories and a real context behind what happened. Most remember the terror hysteria followed by arrests and people awaiting the decision as to whether charges under the Terrorism Sup- pression Act would be authorised. What many people don't know is that the case is still ongoing. Eighteen people await trial, the people of Ruatoki are still awaiting an apology from the police and the government's war on terrorism continues.'' The launch is on this Saturday at Cityside Hall, 8 Mt Eden Rd, from 7pm. Copies will be available for purchase at the book launch. Or download the book at www.rebel press.org.nz for free.
