Diabetes Auckland open day on Saturday Weighty issue: Overweight Kiwis are at risk of type two diabetes. ' The Open Day is being held at Nesfield House, located at 62-64 Valley Road, Mt Eden. ' Some people may call it sugar dis- ease', but the 200,000 New Zea- landers living with diabetes already know the bitter realities of managing the disease -- although they can live full sweet lives if they stick to their daily treatment regimes. But don't worry, help is at hand for those at risk of developing dia- betes, with Diabetes Auckland here to help you learn early pre- vention methods. Poorly managed diabetes is a leading cause of death and often leads to heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure and blindness. It is the largest contributor to foot and leg amputations and also causes impotence. Every day 19 New Zealanders are diagnosed with diabetes and the latest data shows the people most affected are of working age. However, more children and young adults are now getting type two diabetes, primarily because they consume too much energy from high-calorie foods that they can't burn off. With around 60 percent of us overweight, a BOAT (Bit Of A Tummy) may not worry us too much. However, the other bits' of the problem should. A Bit Of a Tummy often goes with a bit' of diabetes. And a bit' of a heart attack or a bit' of a stroke can ruin your life. If you have a BOAT and especially if you have a LOT (Lot Of Tummy), check your diabetes risk factors at www.diabetesauckland.org.nz. Alternatively you can get checked at Diabetes Auckland's Open Day on Saturday November 14, 10am to 4pm. The Open Day is being held at Nesfield House, located at 62-64 Valley Road, Mt Eden. Phone 623-2508 for more details. So why not make today the day you change your ways! You can prevent you and your BOAT from being wrecked.
