Citizens & Ratepayers Richard Barter was unani- mously elected chairman of the Puketapapa Local Board but there was competition for the deputy chairman s spot with Nigel Turnbull, also of Citizens & Ratepayers, elected ahead of Michael Wood from Roskill Com- munity Voice. Other board members are Citizens & Ratepayers Peter Muys and Ella Kumar and Roskill Community Voice s Julie Fairey. The night reflected a posi- tive community spirit with about 100 people attending the meeting, though it also saw the first public clash between board members after an item was left off the agenda. Mr Wood had recom- mended an extraordinary meeting be held on November 9 to discuss plan changes involving Monte Cecilia School. Instead it was dropped at the last minute and has been pushed back to the board s next meeting on December 16 at the Fickling Centre from 6pm.. In contrast, jubilation, smiles and laughter set a bright mood at the first Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board meeting, where more than 200 people squeezed into the Panmure Com- munity Hall. The board includes new chairwoman Leila Boyle of Labour and deputy chair- woman Bridget Graham from the Maungakiekie Team. Other members are Josephine Bartley, Chris Makoare and Alan Verrall from Labour, while Mrs Graham s counterparts Brett Clark and Simon Randall complete the line-up. Ms Boyle told the audience that the most entertaining part of attending the inaug- uration of the new Auckland Council was learning people s middle names. And my middle name is June but I was born in Octo- ber, she joked. On a more serious note, she said the board shares con- cerns about the new supercity s governance struc- ture and there is uncertainty about how it will work over the next three years. The board s next meeting is scheduled for December 7 at the Onehunga Community Centre starting from 6pm. At the new Albert-Eden Local Board, City Vision s Peter Haynes and Margi Watson were elected chair- man and deputy chairwoman respectively. Other board members are City Vision s Helga Arlington, Graeme Easte and Simon Mitchell, Focus Local s Pauline Anderson and Citizens & Ratepayers Lee Corrick and Tim Woolfield. The Albert-Eden Local Board s first meeting will take place next Wednesday in the Mt Albert Senior Citizens Hall at 6pm.
