Funeral directors: Roz and Martin Williams. Burial or cremation? Local funeral directors Roz and Martin Williams are constantly asked this question. Some people have very strong feeling one way or the other, but for some the choice can be very difficult. In New Zealand there are four options avail- able for the reverent dis- posal of one s earthly remains: burial, crem- ation, burial at sea or donation to the medical school for medical research. With burial, many families appreciate having a grave to go to, a place to visit. This is very important with the grieving process. Burial involves the purchase of a burial plot and usually some form of memorial headstone or plaque. However this choice comes at a cost, which many find difficult to bear. This decision is often made on cultural or religious grounds. Cremation is a process people often wonder about. The casket is placed into a cremator and the process is carried out under very high temperatures, a process that generally takes two to four hours. There is room for only one casket within the cremator, and the ashes are taken from the cre- mator before it is used again therefore it is not possible for ashes to be confused or mixed with others. Cremation provides greater flexibility about choosing a final resting place since you are not restricted to specific places of burial. Some families prefer to scatter the ashes in a family plot, memorial garden, at sea or some other favourite place. This choice is less expensive than burial. If this information has brought to mind some questions you would like answered, please feel free to phone Roz or Martin on 277-7375. As they are members of the Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand, you can be assured of personal professional service and attention to detail. A Xmas art sale It s an exciting time of year, and at Northart it s even more so as they pre- pare for their favourite annual exhibition -- the pre-Christmas $100 (or less) Show -- an oppor- tunity to get Christmas presents ahead of time and within budget. All works in the show are priced at $100 or under. The enormous variety of high quality, interes- ting works of art and craft always provides something intriguing for every taste. This is a cash-and-carry show: as works sell they are taken away and replaced with new works. The $100 (or less) Show opens on Novem- ber 8. The gallery is open daily 10am to 4pm. Northart is located in the Northcote Shopping Centre, opposite the Northcote Library at the bottom of Ernie Mays St. Phone 480 9633 or visit www.northart.co.nz.
